He Was Right
I wore my Fitbit today for the first time in a very long time. (I know how excited you must feel about this news!)
My husband surprised me a few months ago–thinking it would help motivate me to walk. He did this as a result of hearing me complain (over and over) about how bad I felt about myself. I’ve (almost) always been in decent shape, but let me tell you what! Once you’re in your 50’s, it. Is. A. Challenge.
When I first started wearing it, I never took it off. I was walking at least 3 miles a day and was feeling pretty good about how committed I was on a daily basis.
After awhile, I started to become discouraged. I wasn’t losing weight or seeing any kind of improvement even though I was being consistent.
Then, it happened. I didn’t get my walks in – which meant my step count was low. Messages kept popping up throughout the day to remind me that I needed to get up and get going.
This thing was irritating me m o r e than it was motivating me – so I quit. And you know what? It felt pretty good. I experienced freedom from that little nagging Fitbit that constantly reminded me that I wasn’t doing enough. Why even try when you don’t feel like you’re getting anything out of it. Right? Wrong.
My husband reminded me that my commitment to exercising HAD to be doing something good; sometimes the change or the benefits can’t be seen.
How about you? Have you given up on something that required consistency and commitment? Have you given up on exercise? Your marriage? Your kids? Your church? God?
I can’t help but think about those people I’ve known who studied the Bible, faithfully attended and served in the church, but later decided that their life would be just as good without it.
I have to wonder if it would’ve made a difference if someone had taken the time to explain that sometimes you won’t see the benefits in this lifetime –the important thing is that you understand that what you do now will make a difference later – eternally. If any of that resonates with you, please read the following. I pray these words will be a constant reminder throughout your day – for the rest of your life.
Because …. you are loved.
“Physical training is good, but training for Godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” ~ 1 Timothy 4:8
“If Jesus hadn’t known the truth of God’s word, he couldn’t have used it to fight the devil. The same is true for you and me.” Pastor Steve Poe (Northview Christian Church)
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” ~ Phil. 3:12-14
