Living by Faith, Not by Sight

We once had a Labrador Retriever. She was such a beautiful dog. Very, very special for many reasons. One Thanksgiving we almost lost her. She was so lethargic–she didn’t have the energy to get up, drink her water or eat a bite of food. We found out the next day that she was diabetic. We learned how to give her two shots of insulin a day and we stopped giving her “people” treats–like dropping popcorn on the floor for her to find. (She loved it!)

During her last year before she died, she lost her eyesight. I was devastated at first, but was so relieved when I noticed how well she adjusted. It was amazing! As a matter of fact, there were times when I would forget that she couldn’t see.

One day I moved a chair so that it was near the bottom of the stairs in our living room. Soon after, she came rushing down the stairs and ran right into it. Needless to say, I felt horrible. I’m pretty sure I cried. Before I had a chance to move it back, I noticed the next time she came down the stairs–she was very cautious. She didn’t storm down the steps like usual. She remembered.

Whoever said “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” didn’t know our Sydney.

Change. Is. Hard. Especially when it needs to take place in our thought process and the heart. What I learned from Sydney is this: Learn from the pain. Adjust — then trust.
