Because He Lives….

Haven’t blogged in a while. I’ve been a bit overwhelmed, but life is good. Learned an important lesson through an experience at preschool. God continues to amaze me how he uses children to teach me so much! Hopefully what I share will encourage someone else.

One day last week, one of my more serious students was our calendar and weather person.  She knew all the answers that I asked  – what month it was, how many days are in the week, etc…  You name it, she knew it. Next, she  selected which channel she wished  to be on to do the weather, then quietly spoke  into a  microphone as she introduced herself to her ‘viewers’ in the classroom.

Well, as usual – she did everything she was supposed to do – up until when she announced that  she was the weather BOY. When I started to correct her,  she began to giggle.  You should’ve seen her smile! Once we all realized that this wasn’t a slip of her tongue,  we all started to crack up!

You see, this student pretty much always does what’s expected of her  at preschool. I’ve seen her laugh – many times, but I’ve never heard her try to be the one to make others laugh. When I told her mom about how her little girl had made our day,  she told me that she’s like that at home – all the time! Here I’ve had her in my class since August, and I had no clue she could be so funny. Such a sweet surprise.

Although this was a pleasant  discovery,  it made me realize how often we are wrong about people.  I think about the times when I’ve put people up on a pedestal ,  and then discovered something about them that wasn’t  pleasant.  Ever been there? It can really mess with your mind and your ability to trust.

Even though we don’t admit it, we often expect those people that we look up to – to not fail us (or others) in any way.  When they do disappoint or hurt us, we hesitate to forgive. You know – THOSE people don’t deserve it because THEY should know better. Ha. Shouldn’t we all? I’m so thankful that our heavenly Father doesn’t look at us like that, aren’t you? Because the truth is – we don’t deserve His forgiveness. Period.

I recently purchased a new devotional. It’s called “Grace for the Moment”, by Max Lucado. This morning’s devotion pretty much set me straight. It made me think about everything He did  for me –  and continues to do – even though ‘ I’  don’t deserve it.

“Sometimes God is so touched by what he sees that he gives us what we need and not simply that for which we ask.

It’s a good thing. For who would have ever thought to ask God for what he gives? Which of us would have dared to say: “God, would you please hang yourself on a tool of torture as a substitution for every mistake I have ever committed?” And then have the audacity to add: “And after you forgive me, could you prepare me a place in your house to live forever?”

And if THAT wasn’t enough: “And would you please live within me and protect me and guide me and bless me with more than I could ever deserve?”

Honestly, would we have the chutzpah to ask for that?

Jesus already knows the cost of grace. He already knows the price of forgiveness. But he offers it anyway. Love burst his heart.” (Max Lucado)

What an example, huh?  His grace is amazing.

“When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” – John 8:7

“So watch yourselves. “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says , ‘I repent,’ forgive him.” – Luke 17:3-4

“For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” – Matthew 6:14-15

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8
